“New York, I Love You”

New York, I Love You

But you’re bringing me down /

Or so said that band /

Whose reformation was a surprise /

To most (missed the breakup)

New York, I Love You /

As your towers light up over water /

Bankers and janitors, both /

Trespass work on human hours

New York, I Love You /

Capital of the World! The City of Cities /

I’d repeat at parties /

Such a clever claim to culture

New York, I Love You /

But you’re the weight of the world /

A babel of expectation /

Your carousel plays out of tune

New York, I want to lean unsafe over your railing /

Tumble my phone to your freeway /

It’s neurotic grip smashed /

A million glittering icons /

Emojis and work emails /

Love notes, sex tapes, heartbreak /

Painstaking political posts /

The Grams that made the cut

They’d spin surprised on your asphalt /

Digital fish gasping /

Then die, and surely /

That would be freedom…
